Sewing Classes in Shetland @ Uphouse Crafts

Learn to sew in Shetland with classes at Uphouse Crafts.

Open to residents and visitors, these one-day classes are held at my workshop in Aith. Find us easily with the directions on our website.

Classes are 4.5 hours long and include a 30-minute break. Cost ranges from £80-90 per person, with a 50% discount for booking for two people. Kits are included in the cost.

Sewing machines provided, or bring your own. Must be capable of straight, zig zag, and button hole stitches.

What are the sewing classes available?

Beginners 1

Learn sewing basics: machine set up and maintenance, making two useful items with various techniques and skills.

Beginners 2

Learn sewing machine setup, maintenance, and necessary skills such as sewing with layers, inserting a zip, and working with stretch fabrics. Make three useful items with basic techniques.

Make a Peg Bag

Make your own Uphouse Crafts Peg Bag.  Learn basic skills such as simple quilting, attaching binding, adding darts for shape and using bag hardware.

To do this class you should know how to operate a sewing maching, and ideally have completed a beginners class or be a confident beginner.

Sewing Stretchy Fabrics

Learn how to sew stretchy fabrics by creating a baby bib and hat set, as well as an adult beanie hat using cotton lycra jersey.  Discover techniques for cutting jersey fabric with a rotary cutter and self-healing mat.  Master handling stretchy fabrics and preventing bumpy seams for a smooth finish.

Patchwork & Quilting 1

Learn how to make patchwork sawtooth star blocks, add sashing, assemble for quilting, and finish with a flip finish method, plus how to square blocks and cut using a rotary cutter and self-healing mat. Gain the skills to make your own placemats and coasters.

Patchwork & Quilting 2

Learn to make patchwork sawtooth star blocks, add sashing, and quilt with a sewing machine. Gain skills for accurate cutting and binding techniques. By the end, you'll have the skills to create your own quilt.

Overlocker Basics

Learn to sew on an overlocker at Uphouse Crafts. Create a snood and baby clothes to practice different techniques. Bring your own overlocker or try one at the class.

General Sewing

Do you want to learn a new technique? Learn how to make a bag or purse? Do you want to learn how to do basic alterations or repairs? 

In the general sewing class, you pick what you want to do. All you have to do is message me before you book so I can make a course plan for you. Once you are happy with the plan you can go ahead and book a time to suit you.
