Sewing Classes in Shetland @ Uphouse Crafts

Are you in Shetland and want to learn to sew?

These classes are also open to anyone living or visiting Shetland as each class is only one day.

Where do the classes take place?

The sewing classes by Uphouse Crafts take place in Shetland at my home workshop in Aith.   Please see the visiting us section of this website for details on how to find us.

How long are the classes?  What should I expect?

Each class is 4.5-hours of tuition for up to two learners with 30-minute break will be provided in the middle for you to enjoy a cup of tea.  There will also be enough time to quickly visit the shop if you don't have a packed lunch

What is the cost?

The classes range from £80-90 per person, you can save money by booking for two people! Receive an automatic 50% discount on the second person when you and your friend learn to sew together.  (discount is applied automatically at the checkout).  All classes cover the cost of any necessary kits, except for the general sewing class.

Do I need my own sewing machine?

During the classes, you have the option of using one of Uphouse Crafts' sewing machines or bringing your own. Please ensure that your personal sewing machine is capable of performing a straight and zig zag stitch, and if possible, a button hole stitch.

What should I take with me?

If you want to use your own sewing machine, take that, plus needles for your machine.  I have thread and any other items that you may need. 

When learning to sew it can be easier to use bare feet to work the foot pedal so take socks or slippers if you want to try that.

Please take snacks, and/or a packed lunch with you.  Tea and Coffee are provided.

Rescheduling or cancelling classes?

Call 07919 264148 or email andrea@uphousecrafts.com and you can reschedule to another day and time to suit you.  Please give as much notice as possible. 

If you wish to cancel your class please call or email at least 24 hours before your class to receive a full refund.  Cancellations within 24 hours of your class will be subject to a cancellation fee (25% of the class fee).

What are the sewing classes available?

Beginners 1

You will learn how to set up your sewing machine, how to clean your machine and when to change your needles and thread.

You will make four items, each of which have useful techniques.

•  Basic quilted coaster
• Quilted Patchwork coaster 
• Lanyard with button closure

The skills you will learn are:

•         Basic patchwork
•        Sewing with layers
•        Sewing straight lines
•        Top stitching
•        Buttonholes
•        Sewing on buttons
•        Fitting hardware

Beginners 2

You will learn how to set up your sewing machine, how to clean your machine and when to change your needles and thread.

You will make three items, each of which have useful techniques.

• Zip Pouch
• Stretch Faux Knot Headband
• Baby Hat

The skills you will learn are:

• Basic Sewing
• Sewing with Layers
• Sewing straight line
• Top Stitching
• Inserting a zip
• Addin a lining to a zip pouch
• Sewing stretch fabrics
• Learning about the different stitches and needles for stretch fabrics

Patchwork & Quilting 1

You will learn how to make a simple patchwork sawtooth star block, how to add sashing, how to assemble an item for quilting and finish using a flip finish method.

You will also learn how to square blocks and cut using a rotary cutter and self-healing mat.  At the end of the course, you should have all the skills to make your own placemats and coasters.

Patchwork & Quilting 2

In this course, you will gain the expertise to create a patchwork modified sawtooth star block, add sashing, and assemble a quilt using traditional binding methods. You will also learn how to quilt using a sewing machine with a regular or walking foot, and how to accurately square blocks and cut fabric with a rotary cutter and self-healing mat. By the end, you will have the necessary skills to craft your own quilt.

Overlocker Basics

Become proficient in sewing straight, curved, and round edges using an overlocker. Create a snood and baby clothes to master different techniques. Bring your own overlocker to class or try out Uphouse Crafts' overlocker before making a purchase.

General Sewing

Do you want to learn a new technique? Learn how to make a bag or purse? Do you want to learn how to do basic alterations or repairs? 

In the general sewing class, you pick what you want to do. All you have to do is message me before you book so I can make a course plan for you. Once you are happy with the plan you can go ahead and book a time to suit you.
