Learn to sew in Shetland with classes at Uphouse Crafts.

Open to residents and visitors, these one-day classes are held at my workshop in Aith. Find us easily with the directions on our website.   If you are 15 or under you should be accompanied by an adult.

This class is 5 hours and includes a 30-minute break. Cost ranges from £122.50 per person, with a 50% discount for booking for two people. Kits are included in the cost.

Sewing machines provided, or bring your own. Must be capable of straight, zig zag, and button hole stitches.

Sewing with Stretchy Fabrics Basics Class

Learn to sew stretchy fabitrcs on your sewing machine at Uphouse Crafts. Create a snood and baby clothes to practice different techniques. Bring your own seweing machine or try one at the class.

During the class you will learn how to do the following:

  1. Idenitify the different types of stretchy fabrics
  2. How to lay out your fabric for cutting
  3. How to cut your patterns out
  4. How to pin/clip your fabrics together
  5. The stitches you can use to get the best end results
  6. How to attach neckbands, cuffs and waistbands
  7. How to finish your seams

When you are finished you will have three items to take home with you.  A cotton jersey snood and a baby top and hareems.  By making this three items you will gain confidence in sewing with stretchy fabrics and master some of the basic techniques for getting great results every time.

Introduction

Uphouse Crafts is a small business offering sewing lessons from their home in Aith, Shetland.

Role of Uphouse Crafts (UC):

  • Central contact point for transactions.
  • Tutor for sewing lessons.
  • Responsible for delivering the booked sewing lesson, providing written notes, and a sewing kit.

Ordering Process:

  • Orders placed via the shopping cart on the UC website are offers to purchase.
  • Email confirmation from UC constitutes acceptance and the formation of a contract.
  • Buyers are advised to review item details for accuracy and query before ordering.

Payment:

  • Payments must be made through approved methods on the website.
  • Price options are listed on the sewing class pages.

Reschedule and Cancellation:

  • Call 07919 264148 or email andrea@uphousecrafts.com to reschedule to another day and time that suits you. Please give as much notice as possible.
  • To cancel your class, please call or email at least 24 hours before your class to receive a full refund.
  • Cancellations within 24 hours of your class will incur a cancellation fee (25% of the class fee).

  • Personal information is shared with the Easy Booking App that controls the booking system.
  • Should we wish to write about your sewing lesson for a customer story, we will ask for permission and discuss the scope of what will be written. You will also receive a copy of the finished blog/story to ensure your satisfaction with its content.

Additional Notes Regarding Sewing Lessons:

Are you in Shetland and want to learn to sew?

These classes are open to anyone living in or visiting Shetland, as each class lasts just one day.

Where do the classes take place?

Uphouse Crafts' sewing classes take place in my home workshop in Aith, Shetland. Please see the "visiting us" section of this website for details on how to find us.

How long are the classes? What should I expect?

Each class provides from 2 - 5 hours of tuition for up to two learners, including a 30-minute break in the middle for enjoying a cup of tea in the longer classes. In the longer classes you will also be visit the local shop if you haven’t brought a packed lunch.

What is the cost?

Classes range from £60-£135 per person. Save money by booking for two people!

Receive an automatic 50% discount on the second person when you and your friend learn to sew together (discount applied automatically at checkout).

All classes cover the cost of any necessary kits, except for the general sewing class.

Do I need my own sewing machine?

You have the option of using one of Uphouse Crafts' sewing machines or bringing your own. Please ensure that your personal sewing machine is capable of performing a straight stitch, a zig-zag stitch, and, if possible, a buttonhole stitch.

What should I take with me?

If using your own sewing machine, bring it along with needles for your machine. We provide thread and any other necessary items.

When learning to sew, it can be easier to use bare feet to work the foot pedal, so consider bringing socks or slippers if you’d like to try that.

Please bring snacks and/or a packed lunch. Tea and Coffee are provided.

Sunday - By Appointment

To avoid disappointment it is advised to message or call ahead to ensure that the workshop is open, especially during the summer holidays.
